Employers may have a choice of employing trainees under an existing State or Federal award or a registered Australian Workplace Agreement (AWA)* or Certified Agreement* (*must be an incorporated body). Employers should check with their employer body or contact the State Workplace Services on 1300 365 255 to find out the correct award or agreement.

The National Training Wage Award 2000 has been amended to allow for adult trainees and Qualifications levels. Certificates II and III in Agriculture or Horticulture are allocated Wage Level C in that Award. Veterinary Nursing Certificates II and III are at Wage Level B.

Federal Awards

  • Horticulture Award 2000 ö a Federal "omnibus" award that applies to  previous respondents to the Dried Fruits & Other Fruits Industry Award.
  • Pastoral Industry Award 1998.

Employers who are members of the SA Farmers' Industrial Association can access Skill Level C NTW rates and provisions (including part time and school based traineeships/Australian Apprenticeships), as varied  through this Federal Award. The SA Farmers' Federation has an "Employment Handbook" available to members that covers these matters including AWA's.

correct rates in the relevant SA Award.

State Awards
Other Awards that apply in South Australia and which have provisions for the NTW, part time and school based Australian Apprenticeships are:

  • Chicken Meat Producers & Distributors Award ö a State Award that applies to chicken hatcheries, broiler farms and breeder farms.
  • Greenkeepers Award
  • Horticulture Industry (Nursery & Landscape Award)
  • Pastoral Industry (SA) Award - a State Award that applies to farm enterprises not covered by the Federal Award.

Enterprise Agreements

  • Local Government - there are a number of Enterprise Agreements now operating in this sector. Information can be obtained from the relevant Council where employment is sought.
  • Veterinary Staff Enterprise Bargaining Agreement - this is a State based "framework agreement" that applies to members of the Veterinary Employers Association and covers staff employed in veterinary practices.
